January nail colors are kind of their own thing.
December was all glitter and red, and now your nails (and honestly, your wallet) are asking for a little break.
But a break doesn’t mean boring. Most of what I’m loving this month falls into two camps. There’s the clean, milky, barely-there side.
And there’s the dark, moody side that reminds you it’s still very much winter outside.
I couldn’t pick one, so I didn’t. Below you’ll find soft shades, deep ones, a few icy picks, and some shiny extras for when plain polish feels too plain.
Okay, let’s get into it.

Clean & Soft
After a whole month of sparkle, there’s something really nice about nails that just look like your nails. Only healthier, and a little prettier.
1. Milky White
Milky white is the most practical color on this whole list, and I mean that as a compliment.
It’s sheer enough that when your nails grow out, you barely notice the gap at the cuticle. So that two-week appointment can stretch into three. Maybe four, if you’re careful.
After all the holiday spending, that matters.
It also just looks clean. Like you have your life together, even if your inbox says otherwise.

2. Creamy Latte
Let’s talk about beige for a second.
A lot of people try a beige nude, look down, and think, why do my hands look so tired? That usually happens when the shade is too gray or too pale for your skin.
Creamy latte fixes that. It’s warmer, with a soft milk-and-coffee feel, so it adds color back to your hands instead of draining it.
If beige nudes tend to wash you out, try a richer taupe with a little more depth.
If you’ve given up on nudes, this is the one I’d beg you to try before you quit for good.

3. Sheer Pink
If I had to wear one color for the rest of my life, it would probably be some version of sheer pink.
It’s not exciting. I know. But I never get tired of it, because it doesn’t really look like polish. It looks like your nails on a really good day.
For January, I like it a touch milkier than usual. A pink that leans a little white feels more wintery than the clear, glassy summer version.

4. Soft Mauve
Some months, pink feels too sweet and a dark shade feels like too much commitment. Mauve sits right in between.
It’s dusty, a little gray, a little purple. Like your favorite old sweater turned into a nail color.
It’s great on short nails, too. You get some real color without your nails looking stubby, which can happen with very light or very dark shades.

Dark & Moody
A new year doesn’t mean you suddenly have to go bright. It’s still cold, it’s dark by 5 p.m., and your nails are allowed to match the mood.
5. Black Cherry
Did you know January’s birthstone is garnet? That deep, almost-black red?
That’s pretty much black cherry. Which makes it the most “January” color on this list, if you want to get technical about it.
Now, you might be thinking, didn’t I just wear red for Christmas? Probably. But December red is usually bright and glossy and a little loud. It’s the color of wrapping paper and Santa hats.
Black cherry is different. It’s darker, with a purple-brown undertone that only shows when the light hits it.
In low light it looks almost black. Then you reach for your coffee by the window and suddenly it’s this gorgeous deep wine.
That’s my favorite thing about it. It feels a little bit secret.
It works on short or long nails, square or almond. And if you’re a January birthday, this one’s yours by default.

6. Espresso Brown
Brown nails had a huge moment, and they never really left. For January, I’d go darker and head straight to espresso.
Juanita Huber-Millet, the founder of the London nail salon Townhouse, says espresso flatters pretty much every skin tone and looks best with a glossy finish. I agree with her on both.
The shine is what makes it. Under a glossy top coat, espresso goes from plain brown to this deep, almost-chocolate color.

7. Olive Green
Olive is a muted, slightly brownish green, so on your nails it acts more like a neutral than a color. It’s not a bright, look-at-me green at all.
It goes with camel coats, gray knits, denim, and black. So, your whole winter closet.
If you’re bored with your usual rotation, this is the easiest way to try something new without feeling like you’re in a costume.

8. Onyx Black
Okay, black isn’t a surprise. It’s on every winter list ever, and it’ll be on every winter list forever.
But January black feels different from October black. In October, it’s spooky. In January, it just looks sharp and a little expensive. Like you meant it.
Keep it short and keep it shiny. Super glossy black on short nails is one of those looks that never seems to go out of style.

Icy & Cool
Now for the shades that actually look like the weather outside. These three run a little frosty, in the best way.
9. Icy Baby Blue
You know that pale blue the sky turns on a really cold, clear morning? Or how snow looks a little blue in the shade?
That’s this color. Icy baby blue is winter in a bottle.
It’s soft enough to wear every day, but it doesn’t blend into your skin the way a nude does. People will notice it, in a good way.
I like it best a little frosty or pearly, so it catches the light the way ice does.

10. Midnight Navy
Here’s the funny thing about midnight navy. Half the time, people will think it’s black.
And that’s kind of the point.
It’s dark and sleek, so you get the same clean look as black. But then you’re under a lamp or sitting by a window, and the blue suddenly shows up.
It’s subtle. Once you notice it, though, you’ll probably like it more than black.
If you always reach for black, try this next time. It feels just a little softer and a little less serious.

11. Slate Gray
Gray gets a bad rap. People hear “gray nails” and picture something dull, like a rainy Tuesday.
Slate gray isn’t that. It has a cool, slightly blue tone that keeps it from looking flat, and it comes across really polished, almost like smooth stone.
Where it really works is with cool-toned clothes. Black, white, silver jewelry, a gray coat. It sits right in there like it was meant to.
If you wear a lot of black and gray in winter (same), this could end up being your favorite.

Shiny & Textured
Silver and champagne are the two shades here that actually like to sparkle. Wear them on their own, or add a little to anything above.
12. Silver Chrome Tips
Silver is the coolest-looking color on this whole list. Literally. It has that icy, almost-white shine that matches January weirdly well.
Full silver chrome can feel like a lot, though. Tips are the easier way in.
Thea Green, who founded Nails.INC, says chrome in January works better as a small accent than a full metallic nail.
I think she’s right. A thin silver line at the tip is enough to catch the light.
My favorite way to wear it is over milky white.
It looks like a classic French manicure that got a winter upgrade, and it goes with pretty much everything.

13. Champagne Shimmer
Champagne is silver’s warmer sister. It’s a pale gold-beige with a soft shimmer, so it glows instead of flashing. More candlelight than disco ball.
And the holidays might be over, but the plans aren’t.
There are still January birthdays, dinners with friends, maybe a girls’ weekend away. This is the color for all of those.
Compared to all that New Year’s Eve glitter, it’s way easier to wear, too.
You can show up to a birthday dinner on Saturday and a work meeting on Monday, and it won’t feel out of place either time.

If you’re still stuck choosing between these January nail colors, here’s my totally unscientific advice: pick the one you’d want to look at while holding a hot coffee on a gray morning. That’s usually the right one.
So which way are you leaning? Milky and soft, or dark and moody?
