Halloween costumes for teens are genuinely hard to get right.
Too childish and you feel like you’re trick-or-treating in middle school. Too try-hard and it reads weird.
And if you Google “teen Halloween costumes,” half the results are things that either look cheap or have been done to death.
So I put together this list — broken down by vibe, so you can skip straight to what fits you.
Whether you’re going with your best friend, your whole squad, or just want something cute to wear solo, there’s something here.

Iconic Characters
One detail carries the whole thing. The right wig, one prop, a specific color — and suddenly everyone knows exactly who you are before you even say anything.
These are the characters that are worth doing because they actually land.
1. Light Yagami
If you already own a white button-down and a plaid skirt, you’re literally one red tie away from this. That’s the kind of costume math I can get behind.
RECREATE THE LOOK
2. Nesquik Bunny
Nobody is thinking about Nesquik Bunny for Halloween.
That’s exactly why this works. The more obscure the character, the better the reaction when someone finally gets it.
RECREATE THE LOOK
3. Darla Sherman
I’ve seen a hundred Coraline costumes and maybe three Darlas.
Which is wild because all you need is a plaid skirt, a purple sweatshirt, and a plastic bag with a fish in it. The fish bag is doing god’s work here.
RECREATE THE LOOK
4. Clark Kent
Honestly the most wearable costume on this list.
You could show up to school, go to a party, and go home without ever feeling like you’re in costume. That’s a skill.
RECREATE THE LOOK
5. Coraline Jones
The cat. I need to talk about the cat. Everything else — the wig, the raincoat, the tights — is great, but showing up with an actual black cat is the kind of commitment that wins Halloween.
RECREATE THE LOOK
6. Goob (Meet the Robinsons)
Nobody is doing Goob for Halloween. Like genuinely nobody.
That’s what makes this so good — it’s the kind of character choice that only makes sense if you actually grew up watching Meet the Robinsons and still think about it randomly at 2am.
7. Max Goof
The skateboard was the move. She could’ve just stood there and it would’ve been fine but actually riding it? That’s committing to the bit in the best way possible.
RECREATE THE LOOK
8. SpongeBob
Every year someone does SpongeBob and every year it looks the same.
This one actually looks good though — like something you’d want to wear even if it wasn’t Halloween. That yellow cardigan especially.
RECREATE THE LOOK
9. Spider-Man
Spider-Man top with baggy sweatpants is genuinely such a vibe.
Not trying to be a full superhero, not going lazy with it either. Just the right amount of costume.
RECREATE THE LOOK
10. Hello Kitty
The face paint is what separates a good Hello Kitty costume from a forgettable one. A bow and cat ears alone doesn’t cut it. She knew that.
RECREATE THE LOOK
11. Snoopy
The Snoopy plushie wearing the same hat as her is so smart. You don’t even need to explain the costume to anyone — it just does it for you.

Best Friend & Group Ideas
If you and your best friend haven’t already talked about this, now’s the time.
Duo costumes are so much better when you actually plan them — not the night before, not the day of.
12. Zombie Cheerleaders & Football Players
Honestly the most Halloween thing on this entire list.
It’s not original but it works every single time and everyone always looks good doing it. Some costumes are classics for a reason.
13. The Chipettes
Three best friends doing the Chipettes together is the kind of group costume idea that sounds so obvious once you see it but nobody actually thinks of it.
The sequin skirts were the right call.
14. Cruella de Vil + Dalmatians
Someone had to be Cruella and whoever it was absolutely understood the assignment.
The whole thing only works because of that one person in the middle — the dalmatians are cute but Cruella makes it.
15. Firefighters
Simple, easy, looks good in photos — this is the costume you put together the night before and it still comes out fine.
Red skirt with a reflective vest is genuinely a good combo.
16. Toy Story Aliens
Three people doing the same character and somehow it doesn’t get repetitive. That’s hard to pull off.
The alien headbands alone would’ve been enough but the matching sequin skirts took it somewhere else entirely.
17. Muay Thai Fighters
There’s something about a group costume that requires zero explanation that just works. You see them walking in and you get it immediately.
18. Alvin, Simon & Theodore
The hoodies with the letters taped on is so high school in the best way.
It looks like they put it together in twenty minutes and that’s honestly part of the charm.
Simon, Alvin, Theodore — all accounted for.
19. Disney Channel Games
If you grew up watching Disney Channel you felt this instantly.
Most people under 25 probably don’t even remember the Disney Channel Games existed and that’s exactly what makes it such a good costume pick.
20. Female Superheroes
Every friend group has done this at some point but what I like here is that nobody matched their energy to the same universe.
Marvel, DC, doesn’t matter — just pick your hero and show up. Chaotic but it works.
21. Margo, Edith & Agnes
The unicorn plushie is such a good Agnes detail.
Like you could’ve just worn overalls and called it a day but bringing the actual unicorn toy makes it click immediately.
Props matter more than people think.
22. Construction Workers
Genuinely one of the easiest group costumes you can do and it still looks put together.
Hard hat and safety vest from any hardware store and you’re done.
The fact that it photographs well is a bonus.
23. Russell (Up)
Four people doing the same single character and it works because of the badges. That’s the whole costume right there — without the sash it’s just a beige outfit.
Someone clearly put time into making those and it paid off.
24. Race Car Girls
The matching jackets are doing a lot but in the best way.
This is the kind of costume that looks expensive without actually being expensive — and the checkered flags are a nice touch that keeps it from looking too vague.

45+ Ghost Nails That Are Cute, Spooky & Perfect for Halloween
Cute & Trendy
This is honestly my favorite category.
I love when a costume looks like something you’d actually want to wear on a regular day — just with a little more intention behind it.
25. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
A cardboard cookie. She made a cardboard cookie and it works perfectly.
This whole costume cost maybe five dollars and it’s one of the most creative ones I’ve seen.
The book reference hits different when you grew up reading it.
26. SpongeBob & Patrick
The spatula is sending me. Like they really thought of everything.
This is the kind of duo costume where you can tell they actually planned it together instead of just showing up in matching colors.
27. Minions
Yellow beanie with goggles is so simple but nobody ever thinks to do it this way.
Most Minion costumes look cheap and obvious — this one actually looks cute, which shouldn’t be possible but here we are.
28. Chester Cheetah
Hugging the Cheetos bag is the detail that makes this. Without it you’d just think she’s wearing a fun onesie. With it? Instantly iconic.
Also the fact that it’s Flamin’ Hot specifically feels very intentional.
29. Snoopy & Charlie Brown
These two together make so much sense as a best friend costume and I genuinely don’t see it enough.
The zigzag shirt is so recognizable you don’t even need anything else. Simple, timeless, and it photographs really well.
30. Dalmatian
Solo dalmatian costumes always run the risk of looking too basic but the tail and the knee socks with spots pulled it out of generic territory.
Sometimes the accessories are the whole costume.
31. Tricky (Subway Surfers)
Out of every character from every game ever made, she picked Tricky. That’s a specific kind of brain and I respect it deeply.
32. TY Beanie Babies
This is genuinely one of those costumes where the idea is so good it makes you a little annoyed you didn’t think of it first. The Ty tags sealed it.
33. Ladybug
There’s something about this one that just works without trying too hard.
It’s not referencing anything, it’s not a group thing — just a clean, cute solo costume that looks good in every photo.
34. Little Bo Peep & Sheep
The fact that one of them is the sheep and not a second Bo Peep is what makes this.
Anyone can match — committing to playing the sidekick is a different level of friendship.
35. Hannah Montana
If you were a certain age during a certain era of Disney Channel, this physically hurts to look at in the best way.
The sequin skirts, the logo tee — they really went there.
Creative & Unique
Okay, I’ll be honest — these are the ones I find most interesting to put together.
Not because they’re harder, but because nobody else is going to show up in the same thing.
36. Pippi Longstocking
The mismatched socks and the freckles drawn on — she didn’t cut any corners.
This is the kind of costume where you can tell the person actually loves the character, not just the aesthetic.
37. Mabel Pines
Gravity Falls fans will clock this instantly and everyone else will just think it’s a cute sweater. That’s the sweet spot for a costume — looks good either way.
38. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
A children’s book character done this literally should not work this well.
The hat is handmade, she’s holding food, the whole thing is just committed in a way that’s hard not to love.
39. Darwin Watterson
Full orange everything with green socks and a name tag. The energy she’s giving in this photo is so Darwin it’s kind of unreal.
40. Eric Cartman
Posing on a fire hydrant in a Cartman costume is so on brand it almost feels intentional.
The hat alone does most of the work but the whole vibe just fits the character perfectly.
41. Vanellope von Schweetz
This is the kind of costume that makes me genuinely happy to see.
Vanellope doesn’t get enough love and whoever decided to dress up as her clearly grew up with that movie in their heart.
42. Gary the Snail
Gary. She did Gary. Out of every SpongeBob character available she picked the pet snail and I think that tells you everything you need to know about her personality.
43. Steve (Blue’s Clues)
The Blue plushie clipped to her belt is so casual about it. Like she’s not even announcing the costume, she’s just living it.
That’s a very different energy from most Halloween photos and I kind of love it.
44. Pete the Cat
I genuinely did not know Pete the Cat was a Halloween costume option until right now.
It’s so niche that only a specific type of person gets it immediately — and those are exactly the people worth impressing.
45. Scarecrow
There’s no prop, no face paint, no elaborate headpiece. Just the straw detail and the hat and somehow it reads perfectly.
Sometimes restraint is the whole move.
46. Chicken Little
Green glasses, red Converse, little antennae — and then that expression like she’s already judging everyone at the party.
Whatever you end up going with, pick something you’re actually excited about. A costume you like wearing always looks better than one you’re just tolerating all night.
Drop your pick in the comments — I’m always curious which direction people actually go.
