If you’re picking out December nail colors right now, these are the 15 I keep coming back to.
Some are loud. Some are barely there. A couple of them are basically glitter with a job.
December is a weird month for nails, honestly.
There’s the office party, the family dinner where everyone sees your hands while you pass the potatoes, and then New Year’s Eve shows up out of nowhere.
So I didn’t only pick the Christmas-y ones.
There’s red and green, sure. But there’s also a sheer white, a cozy brown, and a lilac I’m weirdly into lately.

1. Classic Red
Red is the December nail. That’s just how it is.
It’s on every holiday table. It’s in the wrapping paper, the candles, the coffee cups.
So when your nails match all of that, your photos kind of come together without you even trying.
I mean a true red here, not one that leans too orange or pink. Those are cute too, but I always find a true red easier to wear.
Red also never looks dated. Your mom wore it. You’ll wear it. It just works.
2. Burgundy Cat Eye
Move your hand a little and you’ll see it.
There’s a line of light inside the polish that slides back and forth, kind of like velvet when you brush it the wrong way.
That’s the magnet doing its thing. Your nail tech holds a magnet over the wet polish, and all the shimmer gathers into one spot.
On burgundy, it looks so rich. The dark part stays deep wine, and the light part glows almost red.
I like it best when the line runs diagonally across the nail. A straight stripe down the middle looks a little too techy for me.
3. Emerald Green
Emerald is sneaky. It never looks the same twice.
Under warm lights at a holiday dinner, it goes dark, almost like a wine bottle.
Then you step outside in daylight and it’s suddenly bright and jewel-like again.
That’s exactly why I like it more than forest green.
Forest just gets muddy indoors. Emerald gets moodier.
4. Metallic Gold
Okay, I’ll be honest. Full metallic gold nails are a lot.
If you want to go big, go all the way.
Ten shiny gold nails, short and square, maybe a gold ring or two. It’s New Year’s Eve. Nobody’s going to tell you it’s too much.
If that feels scary, there are easier ways in.
One gold accent nail with the rest nude is pretty low-key. A thin gold French tip on a sheer base is even easier, and it looks really classy.
And if you like glitter better than smooth metallic, a gold glitter works too.
5. Silver Glitter
I have one rule with glitter: the finer, the better.
Fine silver glitter looks smooth and sparkly, almost like frost. It looks grown-up in a way chunky glitter just doesn’t.
Chunky glitter is more fun and definitely more party-ready. It hides chips really well, too.
But it can look a little like a craft project, and it feels bumpy every time you touch your nails. I’m not a fan of that texture.
6. Champagne Shimmer
If metallic gold felt like too much, this is your answer.
Champagne is basically gold without the yellow.
It’s more beige, it’s softer, and the shimmer is really fine. On your nails it looks like a little glow instead of a big shine.
You can wear it to work. You can wear it to a party.
Nobody notices it until the light hits, and then they totally do.
7. Soft Taupe
Not every day in December is a party day. Some days are just work, errands, and way too many emails.
Soft taupe is for those days.
It’s a mix of beige and gray, and it looks clean and quiet.
It goes with pretty much everything in your winter closet, especially grays and camels.
I like having one color like this on the list. You’re not going to wear sparkle for 31 days straight.

8. Milky White
One coat, two coats, three coats. With milky white, that’s the whole game.
One coat is really sheer. You can see your natural nail through it, and it just looks healthy and soft.
Two coats is my favorite. It turns into a soft white that still feels a little see-through, like frost on a window.
Three coats is where it goes wrong. It gets too solid and starts looking like correction fluid. I’d stop at two.
9. Glazed Pearl
The base color matters way more than you’d think with glazed pearl.
It’s a chrome powder that goes on top, so whatever’s underneath shows through.
On a white base, it looks bright and pearly, like the inside of a seashell.
This is the classic glazed look, and honestly the most wintery.
On a sheer nude base, it’s softer and more natural. This one is the easiest to wear every day.
On a black base, it turns dark and shiny, almost like an oil slick. It’s not what most people picture, but it’s really pretty for a night out.
10. Icy Blue
Here’s the thing about Christmas nails. On December 26th, they suddenly feel old.
Icy blue doesn’t have that problem.
It’s pale, cool, and frosty, so it looks like winter, not Christmas.
You can get it done in mid-December and keep it through New Year’s and into January.
11. Frosted Lilac
I know. Lilac in December sounds kind of random.
But think about The Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Or those pale purple sugar cookies.
A frosted lilac with a little shimmer has that same soft, dreamy feel.
It’s sweet and wintery in a way that red and green just aren’t.
12. Deep Plum
So what’s the difference between deep plum and burgundy? They’re both dark and moody, right?
Burgundy leans red, like red wine. Plum leans purple, and it looks almost black until the light catches it.
Burgundy feels more classic and holiday. Plum feels a little cooler and more mysterious.
If you want dark nails but black feels too strong, plum sits right in the middle.
13. Navy Chrome
Navy on its own does nothing for me. It always looks a bit like a school uniform.
Chrome changes that completely.
The finish gives it a shiny metal look that shifts between dark blue and silver when you move your hands.
It looks like the night sky, and I mean that in the least cheesy way possible.
14. Chocolate Brown
Brown is so underrated for December.
Next to a cream knit sweater, it looks cozy.
With a camel coat, it looks really polished. Even with a black puffer and jeans, it warms everything up a little.
The only brown I don’t love is the flat, muted kind. It looks a bit sad to me.
Glossy and rich is the way I’d go.
15. Jet Black
With black nails, the shape does most of the talking.
I like them short and square the most. It feels a little ’90s, and it looks great with jeans and a white tee.
Long almond black is a totally different mood, more little black dress and sequins.
If you’re not sure, a medium oval is the safe spot in between.
Whichever one you pick, it’s probably the one you’ll still be wearing on January 3rd.

Those are my 15 December nail colors, and I really couldn’t narrow it down any further. December just has too many moods.
If I had to choose one, I’d probably start with burgundy cat eye.
Then I’d switch to silver glitter the week of New Year’s and act like I planned it that way all along.
Which one are you wearing to your holiday party?
